ICP - Institute for Contemporary Performance

Back, back, back….back to school. Time to sharpen those pencils, I’ve taken the plunge back into the deep ocean of theater training.

Take me somewhere I’ve never been before.
— Anne Bogart (to Chuck Mee)

Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble’s Institute for Contemporary Theatre - a rigorous laboratory and incubator for new performance intended for artists who are both practical and visionary, experimental and pragmatic - drew me in with the offering of a year-long training in Viewpoints, Suzuki, Clown, and devising. Engaging with the faculty and my fellow cohort on a daily basis with questions relevant to contemporary performance like - “What is that?”.

The mission of PETE is to propose new ways of being through creative inquiry and performance. A company of artists who make new plays in a collaborative way, PETE trains together and teaches their work. They are committed to creative rigor, to the enrichment of their local arts ecology, and to connecting with diverse audiences. They challenge established notions of theatrical form and content with innovative practice, presentation and organization. They strive to achieve a radical kind of presence shared with audiences in the performance event.
